What is MOPA Laser?

MOPA Laser (Master Osillator Power Amplifier) is a type of fiber laser that has two-stage of process to generate high power laser beams with precise control over pulse parameters. It is normally used to engrave medical devices, and automotive parts. It’s marking result is better compared to Q-switched Lasers, because MOPA Laser can adjust the pulse duration settings which value from 2ns – 200ns, while the Q-switched Lasers have fixed pulse duration which the value to 120ns.

Since MOPA Laser can adjust to lower pulse duration, therefore it can control the melting point of plastics, and can also reduce foaming. Other than that, MOPA Laser can achieve black marking on anodized aluminium with short pulsing while Q-switched can only create white markings on anodized aluminium.

Benefits of MOPA Laser

The main benefits of MOPA Laser is the control of pulse duration, by changing the value of the pulse width/duration(ns) from the range 4ns-200ns. Therefore, MOPA laser can achieve result that normal laser can’t, such as black engraving on anodized aluminium and colour marking on stainless steel. In Overall, the marking quality with MOPA laser in marking metals is better than normal Q-switched Lasers because of the control of pulse duration.

With MOPA Laser, we can also engrave some of the plastics without burning the product. By using low pulse width, the plastic can be engraved without burning it.

The only disadvantages of MOPA Laser is the cost of the laser, it is slightly expensive than the Q-switched laser. 

Summary

In conclusion, MOPA Laser is a better choice for marking metals. Other than that, normal Q-switched laser is still suitable to mark materials such as hard plastic, ABS and PP Material.
